I learned something new today and feel the need to inflict it on the rest of you. Here is my very own version of the most succinct diagnostic tool ever conceived. It's short, sweet, and perfectly simple. Just follow the instructions and see how smart you really are.
Problem #1 - Reading through it only once, count how many times the letter "F" appears in the following sentence:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE-
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF-
IC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.
0 Wrong. You are either incredibly stupid or you didn't follow the instructions. 1 Wrong. You're an idiot. 2 Wrong - You're of below average intelligence. Try again. 3 You're of average intelligence.
(Why only average?) Because you got the answer wrong. But don't feel bad - most people do. Try Again.
(No I was right.) No you weren't. Try again.
(I still think I'm right.) Now you're just being stubborn. Here is a picture of David Hasslehof as punishment:
(What am I doing wrong then?) You're forgetting to count the F in the word "OF". This is because most people process these F's as V's. 4 You are of Above average intelligence - but you still didn't count them all. Try again. 5 You are exceptionally gifted - but you still didn't count them all. Try again. 6 Excellent - You're a genius. Beleive it or not most people answer 3. 7 Wrong. Try guessing higher. 8 Still wrong - are you even trying? 9 You're either clicking randomly or you're incredibly drunk. Please take the
World's Shortest Sobriety Test:
Is Wonder-Woman hot?
Yes Yep. You're drunk. Sleep it off buddy - then try again sober.
No At least you're not completely impared - but you're still wrong. Guess again you cheater.

This was great! Hysterical even.
Thanks. Of course it's not a true diagonistic tool. Most of the smartest people I know scored as 'average' (myself included) but when I passed it around many others I know who don't read books or who speak English as a second language did very well. Apparently avid readers are more likely to process words holistically rather than phonetically.
